Series Like Spain on the Road Again

So, I don't know if anyone is watching the new PBS programme, "Spain… On the Road Again," just although I couldn't make information technology through an entire episode I thought I'd give information technology a mention here. For 1 thing, the show's getting a crazy amount of press (peculiarly for a PBS special that doesn't have the name Ken Burns attached to it), and that's despite it having some serious drawbacks.

The series purports to follow nutrient icons Mario Batali and Mark Bittman, along with actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Claudia Bassols (a Spanish star), on a foodie trip around Kingdom of spain. Equally Batali explains in the opener of the get-go episode, he and Bittman had planned this trip (and the testify) for merely the ii of them, but when he mentioned it to his "buddy" Paltrow she said she wanted to come along. Facing the possibility of having just one gorgeous female sidekick for the ii less-than-gorgeous men involved, someone decided to harness Bassols into coming along besides.

Now, the premise of the evidence – 4 people road-tripping around Spain in search of proficient food – has all the hope in the earth of being interesting, beautifully shot, and mouth-watering. But from the get-go, the bear witness has problems. And the problems are such that for me, someone who doesn't have a ton of fourth dimension to spend in forepart of the goggle box anyway and doesn't feel like wasting any of that fourth dimension on something that annoys me, it just wasn't worth it to sit through even the entire first episode. Here are the main things that bugged me:

  • The show is, if I'g not mistaken, largely funded by Kingdom of spain's tourism department. While in that location's zip incorrect with a state getting into the ad human activity in the class of a Telly prove rather than a full-page spread in a mag, the finish consequence in this case means a whole lot of really forced and contrived scenes that probably didn't demand to be then contrived. If a identify is as glorious every bit Spain is, why does it experience so forced?
  • I like Marker Bittman, but in this program he seems like a hapless tag-along to the overly mouthy Batali (who I likewise like). These guys might exist friends in existent life, merely their on-screen relationship isn't any fun to watch – which shows that only because people are interesting on their own doesn't mean they'll be doubly interesting if y'all put them together.
  • I'thou not certain why, but for many of the scenes they decided that instead of putting all four of the travelers together, they'd film them separately in pairs. And it'south near always the same pairs – Batali/Paltrow and Bittman/Bassols. They're on a friendly route trip, right? One that was originally planned by Batali and Bittman, right? And so why split them up into two convertibles to get effectually? I'g pretty sure Kingdom of spain's rental automobile agencies take four-person automobiles that would have been able to go anybody into one vehicle.

I'yard not the but one with issues about this testify. Miss Expatria lists the things that badger her (along with several things she liked about the show), and some of the people I read on Twitter also were unhappy with information technology. It's really a question of the potential the evidence had for being keen, and how it falls curt of that in many respects that'south then frustrating. Over again, if the destination yous're trying to promote isn't a place that people desire to get, so you'll have to forcefulness the issue and make information technology seem highly-seasoned. That's not the instance with Kingdom of spain, so the contrived nature of the program merely begs the question – actually, is it that hard to make a great Television program about a road trip in Spain?

What do y'all retrieve? Are you watching the show? Exercise yous like it? Hate it? Does it make y'all desire to get to Spain?
